The mouth is more than teeth and gums. It is a habitat for countless microorganisms. This community of bacteria, fungi and viruses is known as the oral microbiome. As long as everything is in balance, it offers protection. It helps keep harmful germs in check, supports the body’s natural defences and continually adapts.
With the years, this balance can tip more easily. Inflammation in the mouth then occurs more often. And this is precisely the point that becomes interesting in the context of ageing: inflammation often does not stay local. It can occupy the immune system throughout the body and trigger a kind of constant stress. This chronic, low-grade inflammation is frequently discussed in ageing research as a driver of age-related processes. Review articles therefore describe the oral microbiome as a possible component linked to both healthy and unhealthy ageing.
What is the oral microbiome?
Hundreds of different microorganisms live in the mouth. They sit on the tongue, in the periodontal pocket, on the teeth and on the palate. There is no such thing as a sterile mouth, and that is a good thing. Many of these microbes are neutral or beneficial. Problems arise when the composition shifts and inflammation-promoting bacteria gain the upper hand. This state is often referred to as dysbiosis, that is, an imbalance.

Diabetes and periodontitis often influence one another. High blood glucose levels promote inflammation and infection in the mouth. What helps strengthen oral health in everyday life?
Complicated programmes are not needed. A stable routine is usually the greatest lever.

Brushing twice daily, for about two minutes each time
- Cleaning between the teeth daily, using floss or interdental brushes as needed
- Cleaning the tongue when coating or bad breath is an issue
- Regular check-ups and professional cleaning, especially where there is a risk of periodontitis
Mouthwashes can be useful, but they do not replace mechanical cleaning. Strongly antibacterial solutions should also not be used continuously and on suspicion alone, as this too can disturb the balance in the mouth.
What helps with a dry mouth?
Dryness is a common, underestimated risk factor. It increases the risk of caries and the tendency towards inflammation. Helpful approaches often include:
- regular drinking
- sugar-free chewing gum or sweets to stimulate saliva
- dental advice when medication is the trigger
Nutrition
Sugar and frequent snacking promote acidic phases and caries. At the same time, the mouth needs nutrients to keep mucous membranes and defences stable. Of interest as well: certain beneficial oral bacteria can convert nitrates from vegetables into compounds that are relevant for vascular function. This illustrates clearly that the issue is not simply about removing germs, but about a functioning ecosystem.
