Intermittent fasting is not a single programme but an umbrella term for different eating rhythms. How do 12:12 and 14:10 differ from 16:8?
Many people sensibly start not with 16 hours of fasting but with a milder entry point.
12:12 means twelve hours of eating and twelve hours of fasting. In practice this often translates to: no further calories after dinner, no breakfast too early.
14:10 is often a useful middle ground. The fasting phase is clearly noticeable but usually easier to integrate into daily life than 16:8.

What are the 18:6 and 20:4 protocols?

How does the 5:2 protocol work?

What is 1:1 fasting and what does alternate-day fasting mean?
On the 1:1 protocol, often called alternate-day fasting, fasting days alternate with normal days. In practice there are two variants:
- Strict ADF: no calories on fasting days
- Modified ADF: very low energy intake on fasting days, often around a quarter of usual needs
The 1:1 protocol is the strictest of the common patterns. It can produce noticeable short-term effects but is hard for many to maintain. It tends to suit people who tolerate clear rules well and whose fasting days are not filled with physically or mentally demanding tasks. For average daily life it is often not the best choice.
What does 24-hour fasting mean and how is it carried out?
With 24-hour fasting, a complete fasting day is scheduled once or twice a week, for example from dinner to dinner or from lunch to lunch. The protocol is clear, but it is not well tolerated by everyone.
Side effects such as headaches, dizziness or strong food urges on the following day are more common. Anyone prone to low blood pressure, migraine or very stressful days should be particularly cautious. The same principle applies here: longer is not automatically better. A protocol is only meaningful if it fits stably into daily life and does not turn into a constant struggle.
What role does the time of day play in the eating window?
It is not only the length of the eating window that matters but also where it is placed. Some concepts prefer an earlier eating window, for example breakfast through to early afternoon. The reasoning lies in the body clock: many metabolic processes, in particular insulin sensitivity, follow daily rhythms.
In practice, however, this is often hard to implement, because social situations frequently happen in the evening. For many people a moderate, everyday-friendly window therefore matters more than a theoretically optimal timing. When daily life requires evening meals, a stable, well-planned 14:10 or 16:8 pattern can be more sensible than an early window that is constantly broken.
What can be consumed during the fasting period?
During the fasting period the following are usually appropriate:
- Water
- Unsweetened tea
- Black coffee in moderate amounts
Calorie-containing drinks count functionally as a meal, even when they are liquid. Milky coffee, juice, soft drinks or sweetened beverages can clearly weaken the fasting phase, because they supply energy and frequently trigger insulin responses.
Which side effects are possible with intermittent fasting?
Especially in the first one or two weeks, typical complaints include:
- Hunger and irritability
- Headaches
- Fatigue or mild light-headedness
- Concentration problems
These symptoms are not automatically a sign that fasting is working well. Often they simply reflect an abrupt change, too little sleep, too little fluid or too steep a calorie deficit. The research can be summarised soberly for everyday use as follows:
- Intermittent fasting can support weight loss, mainly because it reduces eating opportunities and therefore often lowers energy intake.
- In many studies, intermittent fasting is not clearly superior to classic calorie reduction when both approaches result in similar total calories.
- Effects on blood sugar, blood pressure and blood lipids are possible but strongly dependent on starting point, weight change and dietary quality.
- A protocol alone is rarely sufficient if the rest of the lifestyle remains unchanged.
