Caffeine sits in a different category. Moderate intake appears neutral or modestly favourable for cognitive function in most adults, though the effects vary considerably between individuals and depend on sleep quality, which caffeine itself can disrupt.
The gut-brain dimension
Research on the gut microbiome and cognition has expanded rapidly. Current evidence suggests that dietary patterns shape the microbial environment, which in turn influences inflammation, neurotransmitter precursors and possibly direct neural signalling. The clinical translation of this work remains early, and specific probiotic recommendations for cognitive ageing are not yet supported by robust evidence.
What does appear consistent is that diets rich in fibre, fermented foods and plant diversity support microbial environments associated with better metabolic and inflammatory markers. The benefit may extend to cognition, though the mechanisms are still being clarified.
